Self-Regulation and Self-Presentation: Regulatory Resource Depletion Impairs Impression Management and Effortful Self-Presentation Depletes Regulatory Resources
Self-control draws from a finite resource — and spending it on managing how others see you leaves less for everything else. Vohs et al. ran a series of experiments showing that impression management depletes the same regulatory resource as resisting temptation or making decisions. The reverse holds too: prior self-regulatory exertion makes people worse at controlling their self-presentation. Social performance is cognitively expensive in a way we rarely account for, and the cost compounds.
